You Are Not An Artist

Book Review

If you are a design professional working in any capacity or at any stage in your career—students, professors, entrepreneurs, in-house, agency, salaried, or contract—I recommend you read Jon Robinson’s wise, well-written book You Are Not An Artist.

In my relatively short career as a design professional—I tarted studying Visual Communication Design in 2006, now I own and operate a design firm in 2023—I saw (and continue to see) our profession undergo tremendous change at a dizzying pace.

This book is a grounding, reassuring, and necessary read about a designer’s true role (it is not ‘artist’) and the immense value of a designer’s mind, skills, and perspective. I plan to reread and revisit this book often as I continue my career as a designer. This book should be required reading for any design professional.
